Songs & Exercises

(main menu)

Here, we’ve got a collection of basic exercises and a few
traditional folk songs in levels 1-3

(Big thanks to one of my senseis, Shawn Head, for being cool with me including some of the folk songs we’ve worked on! :D )

Songs and Exercises

Exercises

Ro-buki:

A roughly 10-minute session of playing Ro with the computer being a kind-of robotic partner. (Don’t worry about following the score’s rhythm… just play Ro over-and-over; as long, as powerfully as you can. Go with your own breath and rhythm as the “Robo-Ro” does its own thing along-side you. :P )

Long-Tone Scales:

I’ve put in a few long-tone, “yang” scales, (‘normal’ notes with holes fully open or fully closed,) up and down the shakuhachi… in Otsu, Kan, and one that spans both Otsu and Kan.

Tsu-Meri and U:

These are exercises that my other sensei: Paul Amiel had us do to get used-to the most common halftones (“yin” notes). Basically, you get these notes by partially opening the lowest closed hole of the “yang” note below the “yin” note you’re trying to play. You augment this by tilting your head downward to bring your lips closer to the utaguchi, (the part of the flute that you blow across to generate the tone).

(I’ll be making YouTube videos that’ll explain this better.)

Murasaki Scale:

The Murasaki scale is the scale used in the song: Murasaki Reibo. It’s like the next iteration of the tsu-meri and u exercises above. :)
